Ben Bailey's solo project is Jacob Asher. He is the keyboardist and vocalist in Joywave. In 2020 he put out Joshua Tree, then Medusa, and kept writing from Rochester while the band was off the road.

Atlas: What is Jacob Asher that Joywave isn't?

Jacob Asher: A place to start something without waiting for a tour cycle. Joshua Tree was the first single. It is a new baby. I wanted a lane that was just mine.

Atlas: Why now?

Jacob Asher: The quarantine year was a lot of basement time. I already had the keys and the voice. The songs showed up when there was nowhere else to put them.

SPENCER. grew up in Rochester, NY. He learned trumpet and piano young and spent a summer in the jazz program at Eastman. The early singles — Want U Back, Automatic, To Be You — came out of a parents' basement.

Are U Down? arrived on 4AD in 2021. He recorded it late at night in a Bed-Stuy apartment, playing piano, guitar, bass, drums, and trumpet, and producing it himself.

The record sits next to Clairo, Snail Mail, Claud. Consequence called him a rising star worth watching. The songs on LISTEN are from that album: U Around?, MyLuv, Lonely As I Ever Was.
